Here at the Self Defense Company we’re pretty sure we have it easy when it comes to self defense training. All it only took years of hard work and training to develop our research into a simple yet effective system. After that we simply had to package it, promote it, and begin training our cadre of instructors around the world. It all sounds pretty easy doesn’t it? Well when you compare that with what people have to do to get in the right mindset to fight and train it all does seem pretty easy after all. You’re the one who has to develop the will to survive and fight, and in your darkest hour you have to harness your courage and do what seems impossible. You’re the one who refuses to say die, we just tell you how to make sure the other guy does.
General George S. Patton once said, “Courage is fear holding on a minute longer,” that is all you have to ask of yourself in the worst case scenario. You might never encounter a life or death struggle, and you should try to avoid them, but when all that remains is to fight, fight hard and don’t stop until you can’t fight any longer or one of you is dead. Now that might sound over the top, but there is no happy ending if you give up. If your boat sinks you don’t stop swimming because you’ll drown and die, and the same principal applies when you’re in a fight. Don’t take for granted that you might be saved or they’ll spare your life. You need to dig deep and refuse to lose.
We live in a society where most people don’t care about a person’s character as long as they get the job done. They can be a total scum bag, but if they produce they’re okay to keep around, but in a fight the real you will decide the winner. It is important to train and it will give you the edge in any fight, but what makes the difference is what you’ve got inside. Your drive to win and ignore pain must be fostered, and through training your confidence will grow with each strike. Once you give up in a fight your training won’t matter worth a damn, but if you want it badly enough you will be awesome in what you’re capable of when pushed.
As a student of human conflict I’ve found many examples of incredible courage and bravery in the face of overwhelming odds. In many cases those fighting were well trained, but that was only part of the equation, it was their will to keep fighting regardless of wounds or losses. Some were simply ordinary people who didn’t want to die on that day, and did what they had to, to survive and live. That’s right at the Self Defense Company we do the easy part, we train you, you’re the one who has to dig deep and keep fighting. When that moment comes we think we’ve provided you with the best training possible, but you have to do the rest. Stay strong and keep training. |
