Now here at the Self Defense Company we believe everyone has the right to defend themselves against criminals and terrorists, and that includes prostitutes, porn stars, and strippers. Yes they make their living doing sexual explicit things, but that doesn’t give someone the right to beat rape or kill them. More than a few serial killers have victimized dozens of prostitutes before being caught, and we all know thousands of acts of violence go unreported, so we have a major problem nobody is talking about. If you work in this industry or know someone who does you probably don’t need a lecture on morality, but safety should be among your chief concerns. Sex workers of some sort have been with us since the dawn of time, so the industry isn’t go away, and the workers need to know how to defend themselves.
This article is in no way an endorsement of human trafficking, sexual slavery or any other situation where a person is forced to do anything against their will. Many criminal enterprises line their pockets by forcing women to submit, and the public should help police stop these crimes. In some countries governments believe the best route is to legalize prostitution and regulate it while in the United States it is illegal almost everywhere.
Advocates for legalization say they would be able to provide greater protection for the women involved and could keep a better handle on health issues. Others want the laws to remain in place and even expanded and argue a change would be immoral and how it will only hurt the women involved. Like with any complex issue the debating will probably continue for a log time to come, but in the mean time you have to survive.
A friendly client all of a sudden scares you to death, an obsessed fan is outside your apartment door professing his love, and the strip club you workout decided to cut back so there isn’t any security guard to watch you as you head out to your car. All these scenarios are very possible, and you probably already know all to well how quickly things can take a turn for the worst, so why not be ready. Maybe you’ve already had a close call, so don’t let it happen again.
The first step to being safe is control your work environment and avoid going to a place where the other person has all the control. More than a few killers have lured their victims to their killing grounds and it can be their home or even a vehicle, so if you don’t have a good feeling just get away as fast as you can. Find out about the security at where you work, and who has access to your personal information, and when you head home change your route regularly and check if you’re being followed. You just want to work, but some people have a completely different idea about you, and they won’t take no for an answer.
When you’re attacked don’t wait to be rescued, start defending yourself right away, and use everything you’ve got. We teach in our training modules basic moves that can really hurt an attacker and all you have to do is strike with an edge of hand, and you can do even more damage than you can with a fist. If you gouge out an attacker’s eye he won’t be interested in raping you, and a few good elbows will make even the biggest creep let go of your hair and give you a chance to escape. An acquaintance of mine is an exotic dancer and works in adult films, and despite practicing Brazilian Jujitsu she still carries her mace and understands what real self defense is all about. Nobody has the right to hurt you, so learn a few practical techniques that will help you stop someone who doesn’t know how to look and not touch. |
