Many women carry purses with them and most will confess that their whole world in their handbag, but often times it has nothing for self defense. Along with everything in this important accessory don't neglect items that will ensure your personal safety.

Most women that carry a list of items they deem essential to their survival, but shockingly few women actually carry items that will help them survive a violent encounter. I decided to address this topic after looking through a woman's interests section of a prominent online article site. I occasionally see articles written about self defense, but I noticed an article that listed all the items a woman needed in her purse. I clicked on it hoping to see things like pepper spray listed, but I only saw items like lip gloss, perfume, and a wallet listed. Not to pick on the author but the only item that could remotely be used for self defense was the cell phone. When you head out into the world with your purse you're prepared for anything, but if you aren't ready to defend yourself you aren't really ready.

In a perfect world, a woman or anyone else for that matter can go out alone any time day or night and go about their business without a care. Unfortunately, for a host reasons the world isn't a safe place and women are often targets because they're perceived as weak. Well, women of the world you aren't, the warrior spirit is just as strong in you as it is in men, so don't let little things like less upper body strength and a smaller stature prevent from defending yourself. The hardest thing for many women is being mentally ready to fight, but if you want to survive a violent encounter you need to be willing and able to strike back.

Self defense training is a good way to build up your confidence, and learn practical techniques to protect yourself. Now you know that the karate you took at that strip mall place isn't worth a damn and that Tae Bo you took gave you a good workout, but don't think for one second that it will save you in a real fight. Sport martial arts don't prepare you for real combat, so you need to learn how to hurt someone and to attack and keep attacking without mercy. You didn't start the fight, but you're going to finish it. Survivors aren't lucky they have drive that doesn't let them accept death and overcomes pain.

Make time in your hectic schedule for self defense training, and take a look at the contents of your purse. Dump it out on a table take a look at all you carry around on a daily bases, and if you don't have anything for self defense you need to change that. Make sure your cell phone is charged and consider one with a GPS feature so police can find you faster. Another thing you should carry is pepper spray, and make sure it is accessible and not buried in the bottom of your handbag. In some areas it is against the law to have pepper spray, but it is up to you to decide whether you want to be safe or just safe from paying a fine. A personal alarm is also useful, because it will draw a lot of attention to your situation. You shouldn't be dependent on these tools, but you should have them and know how to use them properly.

When you leave for the day you probably only think about what you have ahead of you, and do your best to handle a crisis when it comes along. The things you carry in your purse help you when your in need whether you have to freshen up your makeup or have to pay for an unscheduled repair it all can be taken care of by what you have in your handbag. Since you're prepared to deal with a million minor crises why not be ready for a life and death crisis? Train for the worst and carry what you need to deal with it. When you say you have everything in your purse, mean it.
