The Right to Bear Arms and the Dred Scott Decision Print E-mail

Since it is Black History Month, we look back to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Scott v. Sandford and ahead to its decision in McDonald v. City of Chicago.  In Scott, the High Court recognized in 1856 that the rights of citizens included travel without passport, assembly, speech, and “carrying arms wherever you went.”  It then denied those rights to Dred Scott, his wife Harriet, and their children because of their ancestry.  This decision is why many proponents of self-defense rights say citizens own firearms while slaves or subjects cannot.

After passage of the Thirteenth Amendment which abolished slavery outside prison and the military, the rights to keep and bear arms were still denied the newly Freedmen with often devastating consequences.  Freedmen, many of who had served as soldiers during the Civil War, were stripped of their arms by local mobs and denied the ability to protect themselves or their families from criminals and terrorist groups.

Here at the Self Defense Company we’re pretty sure we have it easy when it comes to self defense training.  All it only took years of hard work and training to develop our research into a simple yet effective system.  After that we simply had to package it, promote it, and begin training our cadre of instructors around the world.  It all sounds pretty easy doesn’t it?  Well when you compare that with what people have to do to get in the right mindset to fight and train it all does seem pretty easy after all.  You’re the one who has to develop the will to survive and fight, and in your darkest hour you have to harness your courage and do what seems impossible.  You’re the one who refuses to say die, we just tell you how to make sure the other guy does.

In recent years there seems to have been an explosion on the body building scene, but it isn’t just among professional body builders.  Every where you look there are strong physically fit men and women, and granted at least a third of the population of the United States is very over weight there are plenty of people who are just the opposite.  Part of that is from more effective workouts, improved supplements, and let’s face it pharmaceutical enhancements that despite being illegal are all too common.  This article isn’t about steroid abuse or how you should vary up your workout; it’s about how all that power you have won’t necessarily make every fight a slam dunk.  Hey, size and strength are always important factors, but they don’t have to be the deciding ones, if you know what you’re doing.

How to Prevent Crime BEFORE it Happens Print E-mail

Crime is never unpredictable. Before a lie is spoken, a pocket is picked, or an assault is inflicted, each and every criminal gives off silent cues. They can be as subtle as a shrug of the shoulder, a pointed finger, or an averted gaze. But together, they make up a nonverbal language that speaks loud and clear if you're trained to see it.

Tattoos
While tattoos are in fashion, radical tattoos about the face, neck and hands (also known as "job stoppers") send a clear message to society about where that person places him or herself.

While every ethnic group has its own form of organized crime, and nobody can claim the moral high ground when it comes to ethics the Italian Mafia or Cosa Nostra enjoys a level of fame and prestige other groups have yet to achieve.  Some claim the organization has roots dating back centuries, but what is known is the Mafia of today ties back to 19th century Sicily, and has followed Italian immigrants around the globe.  There have been a number of different Italian and other nationalities that have been called Mafia, but there are differences, and things aren’t nearly as honorable and romantic as film portray.
