I get this question a lot and the answer is probably not martial arts, but you can learn self defense. Martial arts require a partner, drills and an instructor's eye. Self defense skills are simple, easy to learn an incredibly effective.
Learning a martial art is about over coming obstacles, meeting challenges and effecting a change. Learning self defense is about surviving an assault of attempted homicide. In fact, most techniques are just far too brutal to practice on a training partner and can only be developed with the use of training dummies and striking tools.
The only martial arts home study you should do is physical training, form training and impact training. It's obvious that sparring and grappling require partner, but self defense training actually works better with out a partner.
When you train with a partner there's a concern of hurting him or her. When you train practice at home with your training dummy, you can go full bore with out any care of what the ramifications are.
So can you really learn martial arts at home? No, but you can learn self defense.
