One of the most often asked questions I receive while teaching Hand to Hand Combat here in Afghanistan to our brave US and Coalition Service Members is which system is more effective: the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) or the US Army Combatives Program?

While I could give a lengthy and detailed essay on the pros and cons of each system, that is not the purpose of this post. Instead, I would offer up the following response...which ever gets the job done quickly and violently. Below are some guiding principles:

Principle 1: Attack the attacker. Your attacks must be done convulsively and violently using speed, power and a mindset hell bent on your attackers’ total destruction. Don't think about what your enemy may be trying to do to you instead, concentrate only on what you are doing to the enemy. Always attack, and take ground.

Principle 2: Use technology first. If you can leverage technology (pepper spray - and yes, I always carry that with me here and in the states), or a weapon (rifle, handgun, knife or a BFR...big freggin rock) use it in conjunction with the first principle.

Principle 3: Be honest with yourself. Today's rave is all about mixed martial arts and trying to submit your opponet. Look back in history and find out what style worked in street fights and on the field of battle applicable to modern times. All systems claim a combat heritage, but not all styles remain combat effective. I'm not saying to quit what your doing rather, look for any short comings in your training and then take the appropriate steps to fix them.

I will always welcome and respect your questions and comments. Until next time.
