From the Geisha House to the Strip Club
William Pehush, Staff Writer
People have always liked going out and having a good time and despite economic downturn and whatever else is going on to make things more difficult everyone likes to go out and get away from it all. Now you might just be looking to have a good time, but someone else is looking for a fight, and you can’t always take your weapons with you, so you have to go back to the basics for self defense. Sure there is security and the cops are only a call away, but until help arrives or you can leave you have to fight. The samurai had to deal with it and so do the men and women of today, so you should be prepared to fight.
You walk in and a door closes behind you as you’re ushered into a dark environment where the music is blaring and bursts of light periodically illuminate the room. Half naked women swing from poles as business men share the bar with construction workers and would-be tough guys. Welcome to the strip club experience and if you’re lucky you’ll have a good time and waste a lot of money in a fun way. Unfortunately there are almost always jerks to ruin the experience and it can start over something as simple as bumping into someone or talking to a woman some nut thinks is theirs. You need to act and act quickly or you’ll be the one bleeding instead of having fun.
In medieval Japan a samurai had to deal with many of the same issues we deal with, because they had the same disadvantages. When a samurai went to a geisha house to enjoy a poetry reading, music, or other entrainment (there is a different between geisha and prostitutes by the way) he had to leave his weapons at the door and he wouldn’t be wearing his armor. Inside he would drink, relax, and enjoy hanging out with his friends and flirtatious women, but he wanted to survive the night he needed to be vigilant. Whether it was an assassin or running into members of a rival clan he had to be ready to go from relax to battle ready, and with no weapons he had to depend on his combat jujutsu.
Whether it is the law or club policy you often have to leave your weapons behind, and you still need to think about self defense. There is also a pretty good chance that lots of cash and naked women will attract the wrong type of people, so keep vigilant. Know where the exits are and where your friends are, and let security know if there is a problem (that is what they’re for), and if you get a bad feeling about a club or it lacks security just don’t go there in the first place. Be wary of anyone trying to invade your space, watch yourself in the parking lot. Have fun, be respectful to the dancers and the other staffers, but always remember to stay on your guard. Make explaining where all the money went your only problem.
